One more line a day
Tineke Bruijnzeels
One line on day 1, two on day 2, three hundred and sixty-six on day 366. With anything on any material of 15 x 15 cm. 67,161 lines in all.
I knew when I started the 366 drawing year that it would completely take over my studio and my life. I loved it. The year has been like life itself: with ups and downs, days where the ideas flowed easily and days where the drawing demanded more of an effort. Some days I only had an hour to make work, some days I had all day. I intended to play with materials that I had accumulated in my studio over the years. This meant that I could make 2D and 3D drawings.
Because the strict limit I set myself to stay within 15x15x15 cm, I decided that I would take ‘the line’ in its broadest sense. A piece of thread is also a line, as is a nail, a pin, a paper strip, a tie wrap, a wick, a piece of tape, a seed, a pushpin, … and chicken wire is made of lines.
During the year I have discovered several themes that I will take further. I have discovered a new way to use my beloved oil pastels; I am curious to see what happens when I translate the small drawings to a larger size. I have worked with layers in the past, and during this year I discovered layering and drawing on several sheets of tracing paper. Again, this is something to develop further. Some of the 3D drawings in boxes seemed to be sketches for large installations.
Two quotes have guided me this year. One is from Fine Art tutor Alan Franklin: ‘Work until the materials used go beyond what they are.’ I tried. The other one is from Picasso: ‘Inspiration is always there, but it needs to find you working.’ I did.
This has been the third time Cally Trench and I have been drawing for a year. Thank you for the company, Cally! As we do this every ten years, our next 365 drawings project will start on 4th August 2033.
